Mozambique welcomes third mobile network operator

Last week, Movitel switched on its network in Mozambique. This is the third mobile network operator in the country.

Movitel aims to have 2 million subscribers in the first year of operation. It will however face quite a competition from the two other companies Vodacom Mozambique and mCel. The company claims it already has over 400,000 subscribers.

According to Vietnamnet.vn, Movitel says it accrues over 30,000 users daily and has now achieved a revenue stream of about $1.2 million.

The company has said it will invest $400 million to set up some 1,800 base stations. It has in addition since embarked on a mission to set up a fibre cable to provide the country with fast and low-priced Internet.

After their civil war, which ended in 1992, the country was first in its region to reform the telecommunications landscape. Mobile penetration for the country stands at only 39 percent. The Internet connectivity penetration is at 6.7 percent.

Movitel is a joint effort of the Vietnamese Viettel Group and Mozambique’s SPI Co. It was originally slated for launch in January this year but put off to May.
