Google has admitted to having a diversity problem within the company, with most of its employees white males.

Google conceded to its lack of diversity in a blog post entitled “Getting to work on diversity at Google”, reporting data which shows only 30 per cent of all employees are women.

The company said two per cent of employees are Black and one per cent are Hispanic.

However, over 60 per cent are White and 30 per cent Asian.

“Google is not where we want to be when it comes to diversity, and it’s hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts,” said Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of People Operations at Google, adding the company had been reluctant to release such figures in the past.

It said there are numerous reasons why it is struggling to recruit and retain women and minorities, including low numbers of females undertaking computer science degrees in the United States (US), and Blacks and Hispanics making up less than five percent of computer science majors.

“We’re the first to admit that Google is miles from where we want to be – and that being totally clear about the extent of the problem is a really important part of the solution,” said Bock.
