The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) will be introducing free Wi-Fi services to minibus taxis and taxi ranks around the country.

SANTACO chief executive officer (CEO) Nkululeko Buthelezi told Talk Radio 702 the service will be available to commuters for free for a limited time only.

He said the organisation plans to install the services in 5,000 taxis a month and within two to three years the entire South African taxi fleet would have Wi-Fi services.

“We are partnering with partners like Telkom to see that we are actually able to afford this service without charging more for commuters,” Buthelezi said.

He said the introduction of Wi-Fi services to minibus taxis is part of SANTACO’s improvement of the service.

“We will be allowing our stakeholders and partners to advertise through this platform so it will pay for the service,” he said when questioned about who would be paying for the initiative.

“I can assure you it won’t be costing the commuter an extra cent,” he said.

Buthelezi said he believes the Wi-Fi service will contribute to the growth of the country, as it will enable individuals to look for jobs and connect with friends and family.
