Facebook accidentally reveals Snapchat competitor

Facebook has accidentally revealed a new Snapchat-like photo sharing app it is set to launch called Slingshot.

The app went live on the Apple App Store for a short period yesterday before it was pulled – with Facebook saying the release was accidental.

“Yesterday, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we’re working on,” Facebook said.

“With Slingshot, you’ll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It’ll be ready soon and we’re excited for you to try it out.”

The app will allow users to superimpose captions and drawings on to pictures they have taken and share them with other users.

Slingshot is being further likened to Snapchat due to the fact that pictures will disappear from the app after viewing.

A report by the Verge suggests Slingshot is intended as a direct competitor to Snapchat, with the publication alleging Facebook wanted to buy Snapchat, and made a US$3 billion offer to acquire Snapchat which was rejected.

The new app contains an “unlocking” feature, whereby users will not be able to view a message they have received without first sending a reply to the sender of the original received picture.

According to Tech Crunch, the “unlocking” feature is intended to increase the “viral effects” of the app.

The BBC reports the name “Slingshot” alludes to the continuous “slinging” of photos back and forth.
