Nigerian court orders graft agency to probe $475m CCTV project

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been ordered by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to probe the moribund US$475 million Abuja CCTV project awarded to ZTE Corporation.

The court granted an ex-parte application seeking an order of mandamus to compel the EFCC to probe the project. The EFCC, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nigeria Police, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), ZTE Corporation and Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited were named as co-defendants in the suit.

The ex-parte application seeking the leave of the court to apply for the judicial review of mandamus compelling the EFCC to investigate and prosecute the 2nd-7th defendants for misappropriation and financial impropriety was filed on May 28 before the court by the lawyer to the applicant, Olugbenga Adeyemi, who sued as a concerned Nigerian.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola granted the ex-parte application, adjudicating “that leave is hereby granted to the applicant to apply for the judicial review of mandamus compelling the 1st respondent to investigate and prosecute the 2nd-7th respondents for financial misappropriation and impropriety.”
