Rwanda has launched automated immigration control for its nationals, a move expected to speed up the immigration clearance process.
The automated passenger arrival system was launched formally at Kigali’s Kanombe International Airport after it underwent a 4-year development phase.
The Rwandese can now simply swipe their passport through the reader and provide thumbprint at the gate, in a process estimated to take about 17 seconds, the Eturbonews reported.
The new system will do away with stamps and immigration forms.
Envisioned to put Rwanda Immigration at the forefront, the system is said to be a unique and one of its kind in East Africa.
RwandAir CEO John Mirenge said the new technology would enable passengers move swiftly through immigration procedures.
“It is important that all the other services within the airport follow suit in quickening their services, “Mirenge said.
