A Nigerian community is planning to sue Globacom for failing to pay NGN360 million (US$2.2 million) as compensation for deaths when the network’s mast in Odukpani Community in Cross River State collapsed on March 19.
Two people were killed as a result of the mast collapse – primary school pupil Laurencia John Etok and Earnest Adindu Finacountry.
According to the chairman of the Odukpani Local Government Council Bassey Asuquo Eyo, the decision to take Globacom to court was a result of the operator’s decision to renege on the agreement with the community after the incident, which also destroyed many houses.
He said all overtures to the network had failed and court was the best place to conclusively resolve the matter.
“All overtures to Globacom to compensate the community has failed, it has been decided that the court should settle the matter once and for all,” he said.
