The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has announced it has opened the bidding process for the award of a licence for the deployment of metropolitan fibre optic infrastructure and associated equipment in Lagos and the North Central Zone.
Eugene Juwah, the NCC’s executive vice chairman, said the bidding process would be transparent, open, non-discriminatory and on a price-regulated basis.
“The NCC adopted an open access model because it is a strategic means for the deployment of optic backbone transmission infrastructure network in Nigeria that would bridge the current broadband gap, facilitate the deployment of local content and deliver cost effective services to households and businesses,” Juwah said.
He said the licence will solve the problem of fibre deployment in towns and cities, promote infrastructure sharing, reduce right of way tariffs and transform beneficiary states to smart states.
Entries for the bidding will close on August 4 and would be followed by the announcement of the winners.
