Tigo, UN sign MoU to spur Rwanda’s economic growth

Mobile operator Tigo and One United Nations (UN) Rwanda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spur inclusive economic growth in the country through corporate responsibility programmes.

The MoU is in line with the country’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG), aiming to help Rwandans acquire a digital lifestyle.

UN resident coordinator Lamin Manneh described the agreement as “a groundbreaking step to move forward with public-private partnerships in Rwanda to collectively support the implementation of the development priorities of the country”.

UN and Tigo joint activities will include the development of mobile apps to help Rwandans become more financially independent, develop applications to alleviate poverty, planning and design of mobile phone related technologies, and support of job creation.

“We are delighted to announce our strategic partnership with a strong structure such as One UN Rwanda to further enhance our mutual objectives for corporate responsibilities. This initiative underscores Tigo’s commitment to ensure women and children’s rights to the Digital Lifestyle in Rwanda,” said Tongai Maramba, general manager (GM) of Tigo Rwanda.
