A former Nigerian banking chief believes mobile money is where Africa can lead the world of science and technology the first time.
Opening the Mobile Money World Africa 2013 conference in Sandton, Johannesburg, Gabriel Owoso, a former chief information officer at Union Bank of Nigeria, gave a passionate view of the African mobile scene.
He said: “Mobile money is very important to Africa right now. In human existence from the beginning, at least two things have been important to us: communication and commerce. Africa has always struggled in these things.
“But with the advent of mobiles, communication was solved. You can lie in your bed and talk to anyone. Mobile has also played a role in solving the problem of commerce.
“History has put it to us in Africa to blaze the trail in creativity and innovation in mobile money. In science and technology I believe mobile money will be the first area for us to be leading the world and I am waiting for us to get there.”
