Google is considering a multimillion-dollar investment in an undersea cable across the Pacific Ocean, continuing a trend amongst tech giants in seeking more control over their own traffic, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report.

The WSJ reports people familiar with the matter as saying Google would be seeking to control its own portion of any new cable and connect its data centres in Oregon and elsewhere with Japan.

Currently companies such as Google tend to bundle several fiber optic lines into a single underwater cable and share construction costs, but the WSJ said a number of companies are exploring the possibility of moving away from this method.
