MTN may be sanctioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for violating the commission’s ban on promotions on its network.
ThisDay reports the commission summoned representatives of the network to a meeting in Abuja to explain why it violated the commission’s 2013 directive against promotions, but was not satisfied with the explanations from the firm.
The newspaper said “a reliable source at the meeting” said the NCC described MTN’s explanations as “unacceptable” and threatened to impose sanctions on the firm should the violations continue.
The NCC has directed the network to withdraw all existing and ongoing promotions currently running on its network, and asked MTN to ensure full compliance with the obligations under the commission’s 2013 ruling which precludes discriminatory prices between on-net and off-net voice services.
MTN was warned not to embark on any action that might create a “calling club” effect on its network, with the commission insisting MTN should take all measures to improve the present service quality performance of its networks.
