Twitter is cooperating with South African radio personality Gareth Cliff’s “unradio” station CliffCentral to remove fake accounts created claiming to represent the station and its founder.
CliffCentral spokesperson Rina Broomberg told HumanIPO when the station’s IP lawyers Adams & Adams registered “CliffCentral” and “Unradio” it found an app and over 50 Twitter accounts using the names and the logo.
A complaint was successfully lodged with Twitter, which is now cooperating in closing the fake accounts.
“Copying is the sincerest form of flattery but we were forced to take steps to protect us against brand misuse, especially on such a scale,” said Broomberg in a statement. “It’s a mark of our success and we expect more of it as we continue to grow using more platforms to disseminate our content.”
“We are delighted with the outcome as it shows just how protectable the goodwill of the UNRADIO brand is, even though it has only been in active for a relatively short time,” said Darren Olivier, head of the Adams & Adams’ team representing CliffCentral.
Cliff launched his “unradio” show– radio everywhere but on the radio – at the beginning of last month on WeChat and Comedy Central Africa, but HumanIPO reported on Wednesday the show would no longer be aired on the television channel, though CliffCentral denied it had failed as the deal was simply an add-on to its real product.
