Nigeria’s communication technology minister Omobola Johnson has inaugurated the Advisory Board of the Office of National Content (ONC).

At the inauguration, the minister said the ministry engaged various stakeholders in the development of local content guidelines in the ICT sector and the composition of the board.

“The ministry formulated the key focus areas in driving indigenous innovation, developing the local ICT industry and establishing intellectual property regulation and protection standards,” she said.

“These focus areas had related strategic goals and in attempting to realize them, it had become self-evident that the many technical, administrative and cross-functional initiatives involved would require ownership by a fit-for-purpose entity.”

Johnson announced ONC had set up a NITDA program that has programme desks.

“The desks will have responsibility for leading and executing the specific provisions set out in this implementation framework, with each one focused on one of the following areas- services, software, human capital and hardware,” she said.

Johnson said the advisory board will support ONC; she said it would provide strategic advice to the ONC in achieving its long-term objectives.
