Kenyans to get tax feedback through mobile

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency have partnered to launch a messaging service that will allow taxpayers to request information about their tax obligations and receive instant answers through their mobiles.

The Daily Nation reports the service started working on June 25, allowing individuals to access data on domestic taxes, individual and company PINs and temporary car exportation status, as well as providing a tax station checker.

Importers and exporters can access information on various custom taxes, including the bill of lading, clearing agent status and manifest amendment status.

The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) works by allowing mobile phones to communicate with a phone company’s computers and will be available from all mobile network operators .

“Taxpayers will request information from KRA and get instant feedback through SMS,” a statement said on Tuesday.

Additionally, feature information on car log books as well as driving license postage status can be found through the service.
