Nigeria has concluded the first phase of its migration from analogue to digital broadcasting with the successful launch of a pilot in the city of Jos, Plateau state.
Director-general of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Emeka Mba assured Nigerians of a smooth nationwide digital switchover by January 2015, and said the success in Jos was an indication of a successful transition.
“We have just concluded the first phase of the digital switchover, which is the Jos pilot city switchover. The next phase is to do same in all major cities and border towns, followed by all state capitals before the fourth phase, which is switching the rest of the country,” Mba told ThisDay.
Mba said the NBC’s phased rollout plan will be completed in or before January next year.
Speaking at the launch of the Jos pilot city switchover, chairman of Nigeria’s Digiteam Edward Amana said there are lots of benefits for broadcasters from digital broadcasting.
“It comes in different language transmission and the viewers are able to select the language they want to listen to, apart from the variety of channels it has in its bouquet,” he said.
