E-commerce fashion site Zando.co.za will not rush out an application, despite having a successful mobile optimised site.
Speaking to HumanIPO at Retail Africa 2013, part of the Cards and Payments Africa 2013 conference, in Sandton, Johannesburg, Zando.co.za’s online marketing manager Kate Jansen said businesses should concentrate on the market in front of them.
Jansen said: “You need to focus on what you are right now because that is what is going to add to your growth. We are still a feature phone market.
“A year ago everyone was saying BlackBerry is the way to go, but now it is crashing and burning.”
Zando.co.za launched in January 2012, and the Cape Town business has been visited by more than 10 million South Africans since.
Jansen said their mobile optimised site is seeing growing traffic, increasingly from tablets, but the majority of visits still come personal computers.
She added: “Regarding a mobile application, my opinion is to get the basics right first. So the mobile site looks like an app and has a good usability. Apps are great, but they need a lot of maintenance.
“The only benefit is you are bookmarked on someone’s phone. App development is something we would definitely look at in the future.”
HumanIPO will publish the full Q&A with Kate Jansen this week.
