Kenyan ISPs to block sites with immoral content

Kenyan internet service providers (ISPs) will be blocking sites with immoral content as the liability that comes with people accessing those sites rests with them.

This emerged at the Kenya Internet Governance Forum last week where participants were discussing policies enabling net neutrality.

Telecommunications Service Providers Of Kenya (TESPOK) chief executive officer (CEO) Fiona Asonga said: “We intend to block them because it is the law and until it is changed any users who want to look at such content cannot get it because the liability is with the service providers.”

Asonga said elaborate policies on data protection were needed because users were providing a lot of data to service providers but it is not clear who the data belongs to.

“There has to be clear control on what information is accessible where, to whom and for what purposes,” she said.
