Any solution to secure the internet must involve global collaboration – Juwah

Dr Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), has stressed the need for global collaboration in securing the internet since it is without borders.

“The internet is a borderless communication tool and consequently, any solution to secure it must involve global collaboration,” Juwah said at a cybersecurity forum in Lagos.

According to him, cybercriminals are exploiting shortcomings in the legal framework thus necessitating the need for harmonisation of laws across nations.

“Loopholes in legal framework are being exploited by perpetrators as harmonisation between existing laws across nations is far from being satisfactory,” he said.

Through its recently inaugurated new media and strategy department, he said the NCC is tackling cybercrimes holistically.

“The department is responsible for all issues of information security and capacity building in information technology through the accelerated digital awareness program for tertiary institutions, ADAPTI, program. This commission was fully involved in the formulation of the national cyber security bill and other similar initiatives, coordinated by the office of the national security advisor.”
