Solidarity accuses DStv of censorship

South African trade union Solidarity has accused digital television operator DStv of censorship after it rejected an advertisement marketing the union.

Solidarity said it is launching a campaign this week to release the rejected advertisement – which markets Solidarity membership and would have been aired on kykNET – to the public.

Johan Kruger, deputy general secretary of Solidarity, said it is the second time DStv has refused to air an advertisement of Solidarity’s.

“We believe DStv’s decision amounts to unwarranted censorship. However, members of the public will be able to form their own opinion when the censored advertisement is officially made public on our Facebook page on Thursday at 12:00,” he said.

The union said it would call on its thousands of members and supporters to share the advertisement on social media.

“If DStv refuses to air our advertisement, we will find other ways to distribute it to the public,” said Kruger.
