Roaming charges for mobile voice calls across the five member states of the East African Community (EAC) are to be abolished as of October, according to Kenya’s ministry of information, communications and technology (ICT) cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi.
Matiangi said the presidents of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda will meet on October 9, 2014 in Kampala, Uganda, to officially launch the waiver of the roaming charges, reports Capital FM.
According to Matiangi, there have been ongoing discussions to remove the interconnectivity fees charged by operators for international voice and data traffic, with roaming charges within the EAC to be cut by 60 per cent by September.
“The Heads of State approved to eliminate roaming charges within the partner member states [...]. This will see a call to Uganda or Rwanda charged like a local call,” Matiangi said.
