Hettie Britzz, wife of famous South African gospel singer Louis Britzz and a survivor of rape, has appealed to the public on Facebook to join the boycott against pornographic channel TopTV as the broadcast plans of three channels are contested.
HumanIPO reported yesterday on the boycott of various Christian denominations and the Family Policy Institute against the broadcasting of TopTV channels.
Britzz posted on Facebook yesterday, March 18: “People, because I was there myself and heard some of the comments about what TopTV is planning to broadcast, I cannot refrain from pleading with you to stand against them and all their advertisers.”
She continued: “I am going to find out who these advertisers are and let you know.”
Britzz quoted some of the channel representatives’ lines she heard at the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) hearing last week, such as “ejaculation on a woman’s face is not demeaning” and “pornography has many benefits, including lowering the incidence of rape, even in countries where violent porn is legal”.
She described it as “shocking” and “untrue”, urging the public: “You must stand with us please!”
Anton Myburgh, pastor at Shofar Christian Church Standerton, told HumanIPO the top three reasons for opposition against the launch of the channel are objectification of women versus their right to dignity and respect, the negative effects of pornography and the lack of guarantee that children will be exposed to the harmful material.
Based on the legal weighing of public opinion, section 192 of the constitution, Myburgh asserted ICASA cannot pass TopTV’s request for the broadcasting of channels since its minority representation against the large public reaction against it.
Myburgh referred to the dangerous effect of pornography on the human brain as supported by a medical and physiological research by Doctors for Life.
He also mentioned Britzz’s corresponding findings in reports from Harvard University, confirming the links between pornography and rape.
Britzz’s testimony of her own encounter with rape is also deemed as evidence of the negative subconscious and behavioural effect pornography poses, described by Myburgh as “a powerful contribution”.
She was raped during a robbery in 2010 at the Britzz residence in the province of Gauteng and published a book titled Vreesloos Vry (Fearless Free) on overcoming her experience, also soon to be translated into English.
Myburgh attended the public hearing at ICASA on Friday, March 15, as a representative of Shofar Christian Church.
