Nigerian bank launches value added services on POS

One of Nigeria’s major commercial banks United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the introduction of Value Added Services (VAS) on it Point of Sale (POS) terminals. The bank in a statement said services supported include airtime purchase, cable subscription, electricity, water and other bill payments.

The bank said the service has been rolled out with selected merchants and plans are underway to complete the deployment by December.

It said with the development, cardholders can now pay their electricity bills, TV subscription, telecoms tariffs, utility companies, schools fees, government fees, bet, pay taxes and dues as well as purchase airline tickets on the bank’s PoS termini across the country.

The bank also launched SmartMoney prepaid card for customers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Burkina Faso. It would become available by early 2015 in all the 19 countries across Africa where the bank is operating.

“Smartmoney comes as a prepaid card that is easy to use, convenient and safe, with chip and PIN technology, you can load up and explore every corner of the globe and web the easy, convenient way,” the Divisional Head, e-banking of the UBA Group, Dr. Yinka Adedeji said.

“SmartMoney also gives you an all time online access to the visa travel planner, with which you can create your very own travel guidebook using Lonely Planet content, Visa offers and ATM locations.”
