Ghana university sees future in space and technology

The All Nations University College, in Koforidua, Ghana, is prioritising space science and technology and is ready to launch its first satellite.

CANSAT was built by the Intelligent Space System Laboratory at the university, which only began its Space Science and Satellite Technology Programme last year.

Dr Ashievi Kofi, director of Space Science Ghana, praised the programme and said it would reduce the country’s reliance importing skills to work on space and satellite technology, reported Vibe Ghana.

Kofi said countries such as China, Singapore and India had used space and satellite development to boost their economies and techonology education was key to effective development strategies to alleviate poverty, conserve the environment and improve quality of life.

The CANSAT satellite has components such as sensors, actuators and GPS and is all inside a 350ml can.

The laboratory is aiming to establish a Satellite Ground Station and hope to design, build and launch a 3kg CubeSat into orbit by 2016.
