Glo celebrates tenth birthday with network expansion and upgrade

Globacom Nigeria is expanding its coverage across Nigeria and upgrading its network, in celebration of its tenth birthday.

This according to group chief operating officer (COO) Mohammed Jameel, with the upgrade aimed at improving the quality of services provided to the network’s customers.

“This will make Globacom the number one network in terms of investment,” he said.

Jameel said Glo is upgrading its network to the latest technology in global telecommunications. This, he said, involves an overhaul of its infrastructure nationwide. In addition, he said the company is also undertaking several densification projects which will take twelve months to complete.

On completion, he said it will further enable the company to adequately cater for its current and prospective subscribers.

Glo revealed it is building new switches and increasing the number of its mobile switching centres to reduce congestion. The company also stated it is currently adding 4,000km of fibre optic cable to complement the existing facility, which it described as the nation’s most extensive fibre coverage.

Jameel said: “We are building a brand new network based on latest technology and adequate capacity to cater for our growing subscriber base.

“The project will include the optimization of the existing Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) both 2G and 3G for High Speed data transmission, full integration of our backbone infrastructure with the Glo 1 international submarine cable and upgrade of the high capacity IP-based radio access network which will ensure that our data customers enjoy unparalleled speed and reliability.”
