Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei sets up a training centre in Kinshasa, DRC

Chinese electronic giant Huawei has opened up a state-of-the-art training centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking at the launch in a ceremony attended by the country’s President Joseph Kabila, the Governor of Kinshasa city, Andre’ Kimbuta, said: “This wonderful project … is a reason for great satisfaction and pride for Kinshasa people and the entire population of Congo.”

The building which is six stories and occupies 8,000 square metres will host laboratories, training halls, library, teachers’ office, telepresence conference room, video conferencing room, reception room and conference rooms.

Minister for Post Telephone and Telecommunication (PTT) Prof. Tryphon Kin Kiey Mulumba praised Huawei for their work in fixed line and mobile technology. He was confident that the training centre would benefit the people in DRC and in the neighbouring countries.

The company also plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Kinshasa to enhance local talent and innovation. This will fall under the ‘Telecom Seed for the Future’ programme that Huawei does as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The programme hosts innovation camps and competition such as the Huawei Android Applications Challenge (HAAC) to help young innovators come up with mobile application products.

Huawei technologies have in the recent past introduced smartphones for the low end of the consumer spectrum, especially in Africa.
