Kenyan inauguration dominates social media

Social media was awash yesterday as Kenyans marked the inauguration of new president Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Kasarani”, the venue of the inauguration, was trending worldwide for more than an hour, rising from position nine to seven, while Uhuru Kenyatta made it to ninth as he took the oath of office between 1pm and 2pm.

According to data from Opinion Yetu, in the last 24 hours “Kenya” was mentioned a record 72,528 times on social media with “Uhuru Kenyatta” receiving 32,061 mentions.

As expected the discussion was most heated during the swearing in between 1pm and 2pm where in just one hour 12,996 people mentioned “Kenya”, and 7,527 mentioned “Uhuru Kenyatta”.

This was the second time in a week that social media was rife with discussions about Kenya, after the social media community previously debated the possible arrest of ICC-indicted Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir should he attend the inauguration.

Other top mentions regarding the handover included the words “Ruto” and “inauguration”, used 11,110 times and 10,132 times respectively.

Other personalities who caught the attention of social media included Uganda’s President Museveni and his speech touching on the ICC and cattle rustling along the Kenyan border.
