Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has unveiled a five-year strategic management plan (SMP) for 2013-2017 in a bid to keep up with the fast-evolving telecoms sector.
Juwah described the new plan as the commission’s roadmap for the future. He said the SMP is the product of several consultations with various stakeholders including selected NCC employees.
Juwah said: “A robust SMP like ours has many purposes such as ensuring the alignment of day-to-day work to the commission’s strategy; prioritizing programmes and projects to achieve NCC’s goals and objectives; ensuring optimal use of NCC’s resources; providing objective basis for performance monitoring and management, and meeting the commission’s vision and mission.”
The plan will be a “living document”, which should be frequently consulted to ensure that the commission stays on track in order to achieve its set goals.
A noticeable feature of the roadmap is an adjustment made to the NCC’s mission statement, which is now: “To be a responsive world class communications regulatory organisation.”
Previously it was: “To support a market-driven communications industry and promote universal access,
Tony Ojobo, the commission’s director of public affairs, said the new mission statement reflects the body’s support of a market-driven communications industry and its promotion of universal access to communications which he said is evident in the commission’s promotion of universal broadband internet access.
