Kenya’s electoral body the Independent Election and Boundary Commission of Kenya (IEBC) has unveiled a new platform for political party members to confirm [their] party registration status.
Users looking to confirm their registration status have to key in their national ID numbers. The system will afterwards present a query result indicating the party they belong.
There has been a push for the electoral body to start implementing e-voting strategies in the coming general elections — scheduled for March next year.
Early this year, some Kenyans complained that their names and details had been entered into several political parties without their consent. Following the claims, a number of mobile money transfer agents were insinuated to have given information to some political parties including names, phone numbers and ID numbers.
“We had some complaints that some parties enlisted members from mobile money transfer records and various other sources, RPP only checked if all names submitted were indeed those of registered voters, our mandate was not to check whether they were registered with their consent,” the registrar of political parties Lucy Ndugu said.
The political party register has given notice to political parties that have registered members fraudulently.
“We urge anybody with complaints regarding their registration status to write to the political party they have been registered with and forward a copy to the RPP on [email protected],” said Ndung’u.
The electoral body expected to have electronic voter registration and electronic voting in the coming general election but as their budget was cut last week, analysts say it might be achieved.
IEBC chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan was quoted by the media in January proposing the electronic voting system. Hassan said it would reduce voting irregularities.
