Since Rocket Internet set foot in Nigeria, there has been speculations it would launch an “Amazon clone” for the market, and Kasuwa, an online shop, was launched.
The online marketplace will aim to sell electronic goods, books, DVD and games from local and international vendors.
Kasuwa, which means “market” in Nigeria’s Hausa language, has now been live for only a week and is fast attracting plenty of interest. Although yet to be officially launched — and with its home page only showing a sign up form — about 2,700 people have until now signed up to its Facebook page.
It is expected that during the next few weeks, users will be able to see products on the home page.
Founded in 2007, Rocket Internet has been in Nigeria for several IT business investments. The company based in Berlin, Germany, has done several investments in Africa and is yet to launch more IT related projects.
Rocket Internet has also been tipped to open a clothing online store called Sabunta in the near future.
