Nigerian icon view on demand site IrokoTV will soon be charging for its service which has been free since its launch in November last year.
IRoko has said it will charge US$5 dollars per month for new movies. However, old films will be streamed for free as it is currently.
For a while now, the site has had it on its homepage that they would start charging a fee from July this year. This move will increase their revenue streams apart from advertising that runs on their website.
The company has so far managed to get US$8 million funding from Tiger Global.
In an interview with PandoMail in March this year, Jason Njoku the founder of IrokoTV said: “I think this is awesome for the Nigerian tech scene. In only 14 months, we have achieved what most would have not thought possible from a Nigerian Internet company. I hope this galvanizes the smartest young Nigerians to go out there to build the game changing tech and media companies Africa needs.”
This year, Jason complained about YouTube services claiming the global giant streaming site did stream some of its movies. Jason went ahead and engaged the services of Amazon Web Services, which rents out cloud computing tools, to stream their films.
iRokoTV has achieved a lot by bringing Nigerian movie industry and Ghanaian movies online. Since their launch, they have won a lot of recognition even appearing on PandoDaily.
