Strathmore partners with Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet for virtual classes

In a joint venture with Samsung, Kenya-based Strathmore University has embarked on a project set to see the college’s MBA students use the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet for lectures.

The customized tablets will come preloaded with lecture schedules and digital files. An online portal will be available for the MBA students to access lecture notes and videos.

Speaking to the Business Daily, the director for MBA programmes Paul Ouma said use of technology to deliver quality education is one of the many actions that the university is taking as it deepens its leadership position in Kenya.

Such a model will not come easily for the students who will have to purchase the tablets at a discounted price of KSh69,000. An extra cost for the digital materials will also be included in the fee structure.

With Apple and Hauwei competing with Samsung for the African market share, Robert Ngeru, Samsung Electronics East Africa Business Leader is quick to put other universities in the region on their radar: “The technology will help raise coursework delivery efficiencies and we are also looking at extending this to other universities in the country and the region.”

The Students Circle Network (SCN), a global social network for College and High School students, is one such unique network to embrace e-learning in Africa since last year. SCN partnered with the Encipher Group Nigeria to make educational resources accessible on the INYE tablet soon before launching an Africa’s first online university.
