Spamhaus cyber attacker arrested

A Dutch man accused of what is thought to be the largest cyber attack since the creation of the internet has been arrested in Spain.

Known as SK, the suspected Dutch cyber attacker was arrested in his house in Barcelona on Friday, April 26, the Dutch embassy has confirmed.

The arrest has been made based on accusations of slowing down the internet and data attacks, including other disruptions aimed at the database of non-profit spam-prevention organisation Spamhaus.

SK’s devices, including mobile phones and computers, were confiscated as the cyber attacker is held under European arrest warrant until transportation to face charges in the Netherlands.

The man, whose full name has not been disclosed, is accused of “unprecedentedly serious attacks on the non-profit organisation Spamhaus,” the Guardian reported.

According to Vincent Hanna, researcher at Spamhaus, it was a “small miracle” the organisation could maintain its online presence.

The company’s divisions in United States, Netherlands and Britain have been affected by the attacks, which shattered a cyber record of 300 billion bits per second.
