Social media should follow the course of nature by creating positive change, according to Deon Robbertze, founder at sustainability communications platform Sustain Our Africa (SOA).
Robbertze was speaking at Friday’s INSAINe breakfast in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
HumanIPO reported earlier this month on PitchIN’s collaboration with South African Innovation Network for Entrepreneurs (SAINe) and Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) for promoting student entrepreneurship.
Using the analogy of the mopani tree and its leaves, Robbertze highlighted the role of nature as adaptable, part of a system and resilient in its growth.
“What if we created positive change?” he challenged the crowd.
He feels all companies should focus on the interaction of the environment, social and financial spheres in order to be sustainable and have a positive impact all around.
“Social media communities can go viral just as nature,” Robbertze said.
Referring to Africa’s 50 million Facebook users, as well as 850 million people who own mobile phones on the continent, he believes social media should play a positive role if users are transparent and open in their online behaviour.
As SOA promotes the conservation of planet earth through green initiatives, he motivated brand interaction and awareness in favour of the environment.
Awareness can also be raised by infographics which compile statistics in a more visually attractive and reader-friendly way.
“Infographics are essential information for understanding what is essential in creating positive brands,” Robbertze, also creative director at Ogilvy Earth, emphasised.
HumanIPO reported earlier this month on social media expert Dave Duarte who discussed theimportant role of social media and infographics in the press relations (PR) field.
“Communication is an opportunity to create business,” Robbertze said.
