Orange to launch tele-presence centre in Kenya

Orange Kenya is to launch a tele-presence suite in Nairobi, providing a video conferencing facility for local businesses and making communication more efficient.

The company has partnered with managed office solutions provider ESBC and Sight & Sound, a distributor of Polycom solutions, to develop the suite at the Landmark Plaza in Upperhill, Nairobi.

Orange says it is exploiting the increased popularity of tele-presence as an enabler of people meeting and collaborating in multiple locations, while the technology has also proved to help speed up decision-making, improve human resources and provide employees with a better work-life balance.

According to Orange chief officer, business market Xavier Villegas, the technology will further help reduce the carbon footprint and help protect the environment.

“This solution is an immersive experience that supports an eco-friendly approach, reducing carbon emissions generated by air or road travel. As the threat of global climate change grows, there is growing demand on business to implement sustainable practices to reduce their carbon footprints by cutting down on high-emission factors,” said Xavier.

General manager for FVC Ahmed Youssef added that communication is an important tool in business, with video conferencing allowing dynamic enterprises in Kenya to communicate and collaborate with partners around the world.

Sight & Sound chief executive officer (CEO) Rajesh Lakhani said: “Our team of experts has been providing Audio Video conferencing solutions to customers in Kenya and this region, for a long time.

Our solutions not only equip conference rooms with this technology but also empower the users by connecting from their smart phones and tablets. The service we launch today takes this to the next level by bringing the fully immersive telepresence experience to users.”

Orange will provide the link to power the solution as part of the countrywie upgrade of its fibre optic infrastructure, as it replaces copper, currently prone to theft due to its high world prices.

Once the project is done it will in the long term enable the company to build on best practices and benefits from the expertise of Orange Business Services, its parent affiliate’s enterprise function, “bringing a wealth of innovative products and services to Kenya”.
