Teraco and Cell C team up in “first for mobile”

Cell C has become the first mobile operator in South Africa to support open peering with NAPAfrica, potentially lowering the cost of bandwidth for the consumer.

NAPAfrica is facilitated by Teraco Data Environments and according to Lex van Wyk, chief executive officer (CEO) of Teraco, the partnership gives Cell C new access to carriers and internet service providers.

Van Wyk said: “The sharing of online content and network capacity impacts on the price of connectivity, ultimately lowering bandwidth costs to the consumer.”

Teraco recently connected to the Amsterdam Internet exchange, which Cell C chief executive officer Alan Knott-Craig said would bring Africa and Europe closer together.

He added: “It also offers us access to several Internet infrastructure partners and content providers, opening up opportunities within the Internet service market, locally and internationally.”

NAPAfrica can now reach 2GB per second.
