Telkom’s suspended services in selected residential areas of Gauteng will be restored on Friday, May 10, as the South African telecommunications company progressively repairs damages caused by cable theft.
HumanIPO reported last month on a case of cable theft, affecting 1,500 South African customers.
Following copper cable theft on Thursday, May 4, residents in the neighbourhoods of Tulisapark, Electron, Steeledale and Elandspark currently lack connection.
The thieves stole three metres of 2400 pair main cable on the corner of Heidelberg Road and the N17, leading to line disruptions connected to 613 and 623 codes.
Theo Hess, managing executive for network field services at Telkom, apologised for the inconvenience and assured its commitment to prevent future cable theft.
A police investigation is now underway.
“Copper cable theft remains a major inhibitor to Telkom’s capability to maintain and improve service levels,” the company stated.
Telkom appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity to its 24 hour crime and fraud hotline number.
