Lenovo’s expansion shot focusing on Africa most

Lenovo, the world’s second largest PC maker, last year shipped 260,000 units into Africa a great milestone it says. This year, the firm expects to ship 400,000 units.

The firm, which ships approximately 35,000 units into other African regions – aside from South Africa — says it is relying on Kenya and Nigeria, where a new office is scheduled to achieve the goal.

The South African head of the electronics company David Drummond said the South African market is steady with their yearly 2.4 to 2.5 million units.

There is tremendous growth in the rest of Africa. The company is working to capture a greater market share locally, he added.

“We are more or less maintaining 10 percent of market share in SA, putting us behind Dell, HP, Acer. We would like to get to number three this fiscal year, a position which would be achievable if target projections are met,” Drummond explained.

Drummond added that the Middle East and Africa region has been growing rapidly for the past couple of years, in line with the global business and added that their Middle East and Africa region’s market share had grown in the past few years, from 6 percent, to a maximum of 12.5 percent.

He said this has been achieved through corporate business in which it boasts of clients including Absa, PWC, and Transnet.

Lenovo Group fourth fiscal quarter and full year results ended March 2012 had an annual record sales of US$S29.6 billion, some 37 percent year-over-year increase compared to the previous year making it the world’s second largest PC vendor with a record full-year market share of 12.9 percent.

In the same year, Lenovo’s emerging Markets sales jumped 43 percent year-over-year during the fourth quarter to a total of US$1.2 billion. The company released the results in May.

Lenovo has around 150 employees in Africa and the EMEA region.

The company bought IBM Personal Computing Division in 2005 and focussed on supplying the global market with affordable computers and the expansion is sign they are travelling the path they carved.
