Manchester United Football Club’s tweet which alerted the sporting world to Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement sent Twitter crazy with 1.4 million mentions in one hour.
Sir Alex stepped down as United boss yesterday (Wednesday) morning after 26 years at Old Trafford and the club chose the social network to break the news.
The four word tweet caused an even bigger reaction than the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in April.

The announcement of the new Pope however on March 13 gained seven million mentions, easily beating Sir Alex.
