Users in SA now can edit their Google Maps

South Africans can now edit maps around the country. Google has announced it has opened Google Map Marker for use by its South Africa-based users.

Google Map Maker is a tool that allows users to mark, name and edit streets and places on the Google map platform. Users will have to create accounts and then edit maps.

With Google Map Maker for South Africa, Google says you can contribute your local knowledge to make a more detailed and comprehensive map of the changing world around you.

“Map Maker is also about improving existing information, for example, marking streets as one-way, tracing a hiking trail, or adding bush tracks that aren’t on official maps,” Google said.

Once approved, user’s contributions appear on Google Maps, Google Earth and Google Maps for mobile, accurately reflecting their real-life neighborhood

Google has also given a YouTube video to show people how they should use the tools. Google is now calling upon South African and cartographers to put their skills into practice.
