NITA and Microsoft collaborate for Ghana ICT improvements

The National Information Tech Agency (NITA) and Microsoft has partnered to provide ICT services for the Ghanaian population.

NITA has adopted an open software policy and obtained product licenses aimed at the government network with the help of Microsoft to provide affordable ICT services for the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

The expanding network project is planned to be completed by 2015, while the data centres in the capital Accra, as well as Kumasi, are scheduled to be done by 2013.

The second phase of further developments will establish 60 additional stations to the 30 existing ones.

According to Ali Famwawi, vice president of Accra-based Microsoft, government officials will be trained to strengthen the ICT support to promote the use of technology in parliament.

Further developments considered include ICT support of state owned businesses.

William Tevie, director general at NITA, told Ghana News Agency (GNA): “I am very happy that Microsoft is collaborating with NITA.”

NITA is responsible for assisting the government in ICT of which previous projects include e-service platforms, broadband provisions and ensuring cheaper costs of related services to the community.
