Facebook aims to draw in user interest with newly unveiled App Center

Giant social network Facebook has announced the launch of its App Center set to make it easier for users to find apps and share [them] with “friends.”

With the Facebook Initial Public Offering (IPO) suffering negative publicity — refunds to financial firms that experienced botched trades not meeting expectations and the stock price dropping — this is welcome news for Facebook shareholders as it is expected the App Center will increase user interest in the social networking site, and possibly revenue from the sale of apps.

The App Center will have “social apps” for the Web, Android, iOS, HTML5 and current Facebook.com apps.

Also, quite interesting is that the apps will be ranked based on quality. Apps will be recommended to users based on their interests, the types of apps their friends like, or the apps they have liked in the past.

This launch also sees Facebook not only competing with Android and iOS similar app centers as it is a layer that runs on both platforms too. Some of the top apps on the Apple and Android App Centers, however, have some form of Facebook integration.

It remains to be seen whether the launch would change users’ interest in the social site. HumanIPO recently reported 1 in 3 Facebook users find it boring.
