African domain forum coming to Durban

The Africa Domain Name System (DNS) Forum is set to be held in Durban, South Africa, in a bid to improve the industry and enhance registrations on the continent.

The event is organised by African Top Level Domain (AfTLD), the Internet Society and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and will be held on July 12 and 13.

Despite the three organisations all supporting the development of the Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs), the Internet Society said adoption of ccTLDs has remained “very low” in Africa compared to other regions.

Paulos Nyirenda, president of AfTLD, said: “By working with and building on our partnerships in running the DNS Forum, AfTLD’s objective is to build on our thriving capacity building activities for ccTLDs in Africa so as to improve the DNS in Africa and the sustainability of ccTLDs.”

The Internet Society said the forum had been organised to discuss, and move to remove, the “bottlenecks” that are keeping the industry from growing.

HumanIPO reported last month the price of the .ng top level domain had been slashed in Nigeria to NGN15,000 (US$95).

The forum will be attended by registries, registrars, registrars, DNS experts, government officials and policy makers.
