Global mobile sales hit 426 million

Worldwide mobile sales in the first quarter of 2013 added up to 426 million units, with Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) decreasing, Gartner has revealed.

HumanIPO reported last month on the decline in PC sales.

Mobile sales decreased by 3.6 per cent in the EMEA region, though it fared better than North and Latin America which experienced a 9.7 per cent decline.

With a seven per cent overall increase since 2012, the Asian/Pacific region generated the highest sale measures with 226 million sales, with a 53 per cent boost to universal sales.

Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: “The Chinese and local manufacturers have been exemplary at addressing the demands of buyers by offering affordable devices with optimum features such as 2.5G (EDGE) instead of 3G in a smartphone.”

Among vendors, Samsung topped the charts with more than 100,657 sales, ahead of Nokia and Apple in second and third place.

Android exceeded all operation-based sales with 156,186 units, followed by iOS and BlackBerry.
