Man arrested for stolen mobile phone tower batteries

Limpopo province police in South Africa have confirmed the arrest of a man caught at the Beitbridge border post attempting to smuggle seven mobile phone towers into Zimbabwe.

The batteries were seized together with the 46-year-old Zimbabwean’s car on Sunday. He is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on charges of suspected stolen property.

“It is suspected that these batteries were stolen from cellphone towers at several places in South Africa,” News24 quoted Ronel Otto, spokesperson for the police, as saying.

Otto added the batteries are the same size as a car battery and were collectively valued at ZAR26,560 (US$2,808).
