Western Cape court halts e-tolling in province

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has been halted in its plans to implement the N1 and N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project by the Western Cape High Court.

This comes after the City of Cape Town’s application for an interdict to prevent SANRAL from moving towards the implementation of e-tolling in the Western Cape until the City has finalised their review application.

“We’re very pleased with the outcome of the decision and that we will now be able to proceed with the review application, with the space to argue the case without having SANRAL concluding multibillion rand contracts and without SANRAL having started construction,” Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, told Eye Witness News.

HumanIPO reported last month five Democratic Alliance (DA) mayors had expressed their unconditional opposition to the N1 and N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project. The DA also vowed to fight “tooth and nail” against e-tolling in the province.

The City’s main reason for the court interdict is because it believes e-tolling in the province is unnecessary and the economy and residents would be unduly burdened.

The City was also concerned about why SANRAL decided to begin the project and requested the relevant documents pertaining to the making of this decision, but SANRAL refused to comply.

However, SANRAL will not be able to hold onto the documentation as the court ordered the agency to make the documents available.
