ISOC hosts Ghana e-service workshop

The Ghanaian branch of the Internet Society (ISOC) is hosting a three day-long workshop on Internet Governance and Standards Development to educate industry role players in Accra.

The workshop, which ends tomorrow, is aimed at government officials, engineers and academia, and addresses main sector influencing points surrounding the internet community.

Internet infrastructure, cyber security and internet governance and standards are key topics on the agenda.

Nii Narku Quaynor, chairperson of the ISCO in Ghana, believes Ghanaians need to take ownership of the internet to ensure continued progress.

The workshop follows a local governmental partnership with the Ghanaian ICT sector.

William Tevie, director general of National Information Technology Agency (NITA), confirmed progress such as fibre optics installation.

He confirmed: “Ten ministries, departments and agencies, including Birth and Death Registry, National Communication Authority, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, now have online services on government e-services portal,” Ghana Business News (GBN) reported.

Furthermore, an online payment gateway will be inaugurated, overcoming the obstacles posed by offline payment systems.

NITA is planning to launch digital signatures as part of a public key infrastructure to empower government-public security system-based interaction.

Quaynor encouraged national participation in internet activity, saying a multi-sectoral stakeholder’s platform will enable improvement with internet accessibility to rural communities.
