NCC threatens telecoms with sanctions over poor service

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has asked telecoms in the country to explain how quality of service has worsened in the last month, after an increasing number of complaints.

According to Tony Ojobo, the NCC’s director of public affairs, the commission had become overwhelmed with a series of complaints filed by subscribers in Nigeria frustrated by their inability to communicate via their GSM lines.

In a letter addressed to the telecoms, Ojobo said the commission stated clearly it will not hesitate to slam sanctions on any company that fails to clearly explain the reasons behind the poor service.

He revealed the commission is set to direct its engineers to perform a technical assessment exercise on the facilities of telecoms companies to determine whether they are up to the standard set in the key performance indicators (KPIs), which all the companies promised to meet.
