Nokia affirms its commitment to fight fake gadgets

Nokia has stated its pledge to fight fake phones and gadgets in the East Africa region. The statement comes at a time when the world is marking the anti counterfeit day.

“One of the greatest dangers of using a fake phone is the lack of access to after-sales support,” Robert Nyagah, Nokia East Africa Care Channel Manager said.

“Nokia ensures that all genuine phones come with a standard 12 month warranty, valid across East Africa, and offering consumers a wide network of professional after-sales service centres. If customers are unsure whether their device is a genuine Nokia product, they can pop into any of our customer care outlets for validation,” he added.

Kenyan Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has reported that the government loses about KSh3.2 Billion yearly through tax evasion prompted by sale of fake gadgets.

Fake phones usually do not have an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. However, most consumers do not take note of this fact.

“The company is winning the fight against fake phones in Kenya and will take that winning formula to the rest of East Africa,” Nyagah said.

He added that the company is increasing the value of genuine Nokia phones by adding quality content and superior sales after service.

The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) has promised to switch of counterfeit phones by August this year. The campaign has however been put forward for several months now.
