Microsoft denies rumours over Xbox One used games policy

Microsoft has denied rumours that gamers will be required to pay a fee to reactivate used games on their recently launched Xbox One.

HumanIPO reported last week on the launch of the new console, though rumours have since circulated about Microsoft’s used games policy.

In a statement Microsoft has denied the rumours and reports of used games restrictions for the Xbox One, calling them “inaccurate and incomplete.”

In a blog post, Major Nelson, Xbox Live development director Larry Hryb, denied rumours users may have to pay a reactivation fee in order to play used games.

“The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox,” he said. “Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future.”

Following Hryb’s statement, Polygon confirmed Xbox One will not require gamers to pay a fee to play used games, but would require regular online spot checks to verify the authenticity of games.

Polygon quoted sources familiar with the system as saying the Xbox One would automatically authenticate a game using an encryption code built into a game’s disc. This is then verified regularly through an internet connection.
